Pmscan is a free command line tool designed to help identify vulnerable Windows systems. It could be the one thing that prevents your next cyber attack. Some of the most common problems it can detect are missing patches, weak passwords, and outdated antivirus software. Two good applications to use with Pmscan are Wireshark and Nessus vulnerability scanner. This article will go over how to install Pmscan on a Windows system, as well as what you should look for after implementing it. In order to use Pmscan, you must have a Windows server or workstation. First, download the latest version from http://pmdasoft.com/pmscan/download.aspx. Click on the “Alpha” link and choose either a 32-bit or 64-bit installer, depending on your computer. Run the downloaded file and follow the installation instructions. There are a variety of options when installing Pmscan onto a Windows machine, but for this article we will be going over a basic installation of the software that does not enable any scanning or reporting capabilities aside from what is already included in the tool. For this reason, installation should be very quick once you have chosen your desired configurations. In addition to the free version of Pmscan, you can purchase a paid version to get additional functionality. As stated before, this article does not include that functionality. When installing Pmscan on a Windows machine, it is important to note the product name and the program group. The product name is "PMSCAN", and the program group is "Windows Sysinternals". The next step in installation is to select the language you would like to use for Pmscan. Unfortunately, this article does not address having more than one language installed on your system due to space constraints. In most cases though, I would recommend selecting English for this step. Installing Pmscan on a Windows machine will not create any new services or scheduled tasks. However once it is installed, it does offer some options that need to be configured. The very first time you launch Pmscan on your system, a welcome screen will appear as shown below. This screen contains the options that need to be configured. If you click “Next” on this screen, you will be auto-configured with a single scan of your local system and nothing else. For this reason, we recommend going ahead and clicking “Customize” so you can configure the tool the way you want it. The next screen you will see is the Product Name and Program Group screen. These are exactly what they sound like. The Product Name should be "PMSCAN", and the Program Group should be "Windows Sysinternals". You can change these options if you choose, but we recommend leaving them as is. The final screen of our configuration wizard allows us to select where we would like to store logs and scan results for Pmscan. For this article, we recommend selecting the default of “Using No Log and Report Directory” so that logs and results can be stored locally on your computer instead of having another location to access them from. cfa1e77820
